Is there a theme for the competition?

The theme is Wellington 2022. This means photos must be:

1. Taken within the wider Wellington region.
2. Shot anytime between 1 January 2021 and 27 April 2022.

When does the competition close?

Entries close 27 April 2022, at noon.

How much does it cost to enter?

Good news! Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, Capital Photographer of the Year is free to enter. 

Who can enter?

Anyone. From amateur to professional, Newtown to New York, this is open to anyone who has taken a photo in the Wellington region that fits the theme.

What constitutes the Wellington region?

Wairarapa, Tararua, Porirua, Kāpiti Coast, Horowhenua, Hutt Valley, and Wellington.

How big does my photograph need to be to enter?

Images must be at least 300 dpi and 7000 pixels on the longest edge.

How old do you have to be to enter the Rangatahi category?

The Rangatahi category is for anyone that is 21 years or younger on 27 April 2022.

I have a physical, printed photo, can I enter it?

All entries must be digital, so you will need to scan the photo or its negatives. Photographic know-it-alls Splendid can help you do that.

Is there a maximum number of photos I can enter?

You may enter up to 10 images into any of the following categories: Whenua, Society, Structure, Rangatahi, Inside, Movement.

A friend and I set-up and took a photograph together, can we enter with both our names?

Unfortunately not. You must be the sole owner of the image.

How will the photographs be judged?

To ensure decisions are fair, judging will be blind. Judges will only see the image and the category it’s entered into. To see the judging criteria, see the top of Categories.

How will I know if I win?

If your photograph is chosen as one of the top in its category, you will be notified by email. The top two of each category (finalists) will be invited to an exhibition of the finalists, with the winner announced at a ceremony.

What do I get if I win?

My photo won another photography competition, can I still enter it?

Unfortunately not. If your photograph has placed in any other competition, you cannot enter it. However, you’re welcome to submit another photo.
